Thanks for the inquiry Jeff, It was an interesting visit and they will be back next week - perhaps I was too nice to them. They gave me a brief overview of who they are (i.e. Mormons) and how they got started. I didn't realize that after the Apostles died there was chaos and the church went under until 1830. All of this of course contrary to Matthew 16. We talked about prophets and whether there are continuing extra-biblical revelations today. Using Hebrews 1:1,2 and some other passages I noted that there was no need for further revelation after the Bible as Christ was the fullest of God's revelation and all that we need is in the Bible. A little later we talked about the current prophet (Hinkley) who as it turns out is sort of like the Pope and makes proclamations and declarations for the church. I asked if it was possible if he could be wrong. They had no answer for that. Then I asked the "if you died today" question and they said that they would go to be with God because they did the best they could. I asked, 'how would you know if you have done enough'? No answer. I asked what the Gospel was and it was that Jesus suffered and came to life - I thought it was interesting that His crucifixion and death were not mentioned and then the other guy said oh yeah it includes the atonement. I showed them what the Gospel is from 1 Cor. 15:1-4 and showed passages on faith and grace (Rom. 1:16 and Eph. 2:8,9). I had them read Eph. 2:1,2 and asked if a dead man can do anything thing and they were puzzled about whether I meant the spirit or body. When I mentioned that it sounds a lot like works and started talking about Grace they backpedaled a bit and mentioned Grace. Then we discussed how they know the Book of Mormon is true? Can we trust the inklings of our hearts or a 'leading of the Spirit' - how can we verify those. I mentioned some of the so called 'revivals' and how really anybody can say that they have had a revelation from God but how do they test it. I upheld Scripture as the only standard. There was kind of a funny moment when after they had talked about Joseph Smith not sure about which church to join because there was so many - I showed them the copy of the book of Mormon that I have - which is an old copy I got from someone who was getting rid of a bunch of books (printed in 1917). The one guy was somewhat impressed at how old the book was until he saw that it was printed by the Reorganized group and not theirs. So after I said something about everybody having splits I asked so which one is the right one as they are both claiming to be the same. Of course their new shiny updated one was the one. Anyway sorry to drag this out. They wanted me to read a few passages and they are going to come back. I have some more questions for them and I will ask them if they want to study the Bible together. I did ask them if anyone ever asked them if they knew the Osmonds. I sort of said it as a joke to lighten them up and the one guy said he had actually met them.
