I used to use something called "pop-up killer" - it was free and worked well, though it would also prevent the opening up of a new window if you were navigating different links. I forked over the cash and got the comprehensive Norton's Internet Security which has been wonderful. It is anti-virus, content filter, spam alert, firewall, ad blocker and pop-up killer all wrapped into one. There is an occasional pop-up that comes through but it is rare. I like the ad blocker that hides all the annoying adds that some sites have like My Yahoo and Yahoo news. It has been well worth the initial outlay and the subscription renewal is $25 per year.
