I am the king of Hot Spots. First, if you go to Panera Bread, they always have a good and free hotspot. Many McDonalds' have inexpensive hotspots. If you get close enough to many hotels, you can pick up their signal for free. They have a hotspot detector that will let you know when you are in hotspot range without having to turn on your computer. It will tell you if it is free or not. Getting Wi-Fi from a neighbor is not stealing. Legally, if he wants to prohibit you from using his connection, he has to secure it otherwise it is free. General places that cost money are Borders and Barnes and Nobles Starbucks Coffee Many gas stations, that is right, offer free wi-fi. Get yourself a $35.00 detector and you can always find a hot spot. BTW, do a google search for Wi-Fi of Hotspots and you can find many around the country. The problem with the sites is that they are not always up to date. Hotspots are growing so much, that it is impossible to keep up with. I have picked up signals where there should not be a signal. Welcome to the world of Wi-Fi. Believe it or not, I am a hotspot junkie. Just remember, Wi-Fi is not as secure as cable which is less secure than dial-up.
