I think if we are not careful we get into easy believism here.  Jesus did 
not say wide is the gate and broad is the path that lead to life, but right 
the opposite.  He also said that few would travel the path. Matt. 7.  Jesus 
also said, that if we did not repent we would perish, Luke 13:5.  He also 
stated that, those who believed in him would not perish, John 3:16. As I 
understand it the word "believe" in John 3:16 mean to rely upon, to trust 
in.  This means a personal relationship with Christ. I believe that there is 
a time when a person is lost and upon entering into a personal relationship 
with Christ based upon faith and repentance, a person is saved.  A definite 
moment in time when  a sinner is translated into a saint by calling on the 
name of the Lord, Romans 10:13.  I also believe it is a conscientious choice 
to receive eternal life which is offered as a gift from God, Romans 6:23.  I 
repudiate the idea that salvation is a process.
