Greg, I agree with you. I wrote an article on "What is a Moderate" in which I concluded that I am a moderate. Why? Because I believe I am neither a radical conservative nor a liberal. Everyone else is either more conservative than I am or more liberal... The point is that being a moderate is a poor phrase. Either you hold to more liberal views or more conservative, the word "moderate" does not help. Thus, I agree. Yet, in SBC circles, the liberals refered to themselves as moderates, especially during the resurgence. Akin is only using this so to show what the "Moderates" believe. They are liberals and most were heretics, but he just stated it for sake of argument.
