Bill,
Some preachers are mercenaries. They do church work merely for wages.
Others render service for their King.
I have two callings on my life, 1) to serve my Master and King in His
vineyard, and 2) to serve my family as husband, head, caregiver, and
provider.
Part of my service for Christ is to serve the congregation he has placed me
in as pastor and shepherd. As I render this service for him, he provides
for my needs through the compensation given by the church.

"And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered
him again to his father. And they were all amazed at the mighty power of
God" (Luke 9:42-43).

I understand your statements as I too receive housing, food, ect. expenses
for managing our new soup kitchen and facility. No wages if you will.
Ministry is a calling for sure, but I thinking it's splitting hairs to call
one wages vs. expenses. If I didnt have the money from the church it would
have to come from somewhere. All my money goes into one pot from which I
pay out of. What I call the pot is immaterial.
We have "Hirelings", but I sure wouldn't call em that because it is negative
and, IMO, down grading from the position you take.. What's wrong with a
hireling anyway?
