Oh, but Kevin, this Baptist brethren certainly does try and evaluate one's
profession of faith but we must do so biblically, and not by some rules or
factors or guidelines developed by men. What do they profess? On what
basis do they profess to be saved? Is it by faith?

Not to mention that Jesus said that many will say "Lord, Lord" but He
will say "Depart from me, you evildoers, I never knew you."
I have appreciated all of the advice that has been offered to me. I'm
not too thrilled with my elders' decision and I plan on talking to
them about it further, but I must say that I'm a little surprised that
my Baptist brethren don't seem to evaluate the credibility of a
person's profession at all. ISTM that we devalue believer's baptism
if we don't make any attempt to be sure that the people we baptize are
actually believers. OTOH, if we add non-Scriptural requirements to
baptism then we run the danger of proclaiming salvation-by-grace but
church-membership-by-works.
