Knowing only John's baptism does not necessarily mean they had received John's baptism. They could have just heard about John's baptism. Matt. 3:5 we see where John baptized, those who repented and believed went out preaching to others. John was never in Ephesus. Someone possible Apollos reached Ephesus. All those baptized at Ephesus and everywhere John preached and baptized were not at Jerusalem on the day 50th day when the Holy Spirit empower the church. There was nothing wrong with John's baptism.
